"when i was in my early twenties, i wandered -- in a very haphazard way -- onto a cliff, overlooking the pacific ocean. standing on this cliff and staring intently at the crashing waves was a legendary jazz musician that i had listened to my entire life. i introduced myself, and the jazz musician proceeded to tell me about a woman he once dated, a famous actress, whom he still seemed to love even though it had been decades since the two had separated.

'beauty fades,' the jazz musician said to me, 'but substance doesn't. you think you are a grown woman, but you've hardly begun. become a woman of a substance.'"

eleanor: "kentucky, huh? i once had a dirty weekend in kentucky."
ned: "a 'dirty weekend'? what's that?"
eleanor: "do you mind if i say something to you, as your potential stepmother?"
ned: "i'd be delighted."
eleanor: "be careful."

surely i can't be the only one who finds the tickerfactory counters annoying.

i don't care how many years, months, days, hours, seconds --

  • it is until your 19th birthday
  • it's been since you met your significant other
  • it is until you get hitched
  • it's been since you got married
  • it's been since you gave birth
  • until you start trying to conceive your next kid
  • (insert another life event here)

if there was an accurate and reliable death countdown, sure, i'd be interested in seeing that.

addendum: for those of you who have never seen a counter, there is a good example:

so my sister got married this weekend. it was fun but these are the things i've learned:

1. while a winter wedding sounds all romantic, the reality is you're going to freeze your ass off. if you insist on getting married in december, i would recommend the southern hemisphere or barring that -- hawaii, mexico or cuba.

2. you will need lots of alcohol.

3. .. and caffeine.

4. when someone asks "so are you next?" try to avoid rolling your eyes. it's not becoming.

5. stay away from the ensuing scrap during the bouquet toss .. there's a reason the DJs chose to play the theme from rocky.

6. the priest may feel like doing the macarena even if he's not drunk.

more to follow when i'm more awake.

weird day. i woke up after having had a very disturbing and frightening dream.

went to work, deal with the usual stuff .. then i went and bought some cute shoes which i hope to wear to the wedding .. and then followed by a huge dinner with chai tea creme brulee for dessert. oh, and jude brought me a firemen calendar as a little present, heh.

now i feel like i could sleep for 12 hours.

you know hell has frozen over when i'm not the last person to understand binary in my class.

don't ask why we were going over binary in a library school class.

llama wool slippers [19 Oct 2005|10:50pm]
[ mood | amused ]

my mother just gave me some slippers that she got 40 years ago when she was a student nurse.
they were given to her by a patient after she went back to peru.
they're made of white llama wool .. so i have white fuzzy feet now, and i've been watching a program on the inca and the moche.

i have seen it all now.

bill o'reilly of foxnews standing up for the dalai lama!
he argued with stuart dryer, ph.d. who had signed a petition against the dalai lama speaking at a conference of neuroscientists in texas.

note: i don't watch foxnews because i want to, i happen to live with someone who has it on all the time.
